Josephine Crowell was a Canadian-born character actress. She appeared in vaudeville as early as 1879. On screen, she is best remembered for her dramatic portrayal of the mother in D.W. Griffith's Naissance d'une nation (1915), her comedic performances in Harold Lloyd's En vitesse (1928) and Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy's Y a erreur! (1929). She also played a succession of queens and princesses in such films as La rue des vipères (1923), Mantrap (1926), Le roi des rois (1927) and L'homme qui rit (1928).
