Josh's paternal grandfather, Lawrence Lashe Meyers, was the son of Lithuanian Jewish parents, while Josh's paternal grandmother, Barbara Marcheck, was from a family of Bohemian (Czech) and Croatian descent. Josh's mother has English, German and Swedish ancestry. Josh's brother Seth discovered on Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (2012) that their great-grandfather, who was from Brazavas, Kalvarija, had changed his surname from Trakianski to Meyers, after his own father Mejer Trakianski.
