Prior to his acting career he had served in the US Navy. In the 1960s he was licensed by the US Coast Guard to captain commercial vessels. From 1969 he also qualified as a marine surveyor, often appearing as a witness in marine court cases. He further held a Certified Real Estate Appraiser License and was a member of the American Arbitration Association Commercial Panel.
