British MP and playwright. He was Conservative Member of Parliament (under his full name Edward Percy Smith) for Ashford, Kent, from 1943-1950. His successor in the post was Bill Deedes, who remained in office for 24 years, before becoming editor of "The Daily Telegraph" in 1974.
