On 20 May1948, Bernadotte was appointed as the first official mediator in Palestine, in accordance with UN-resolution 186 of 14 May 1948. He succeeded in achieving an initial truce in the first Israeli-Arab war, laying the groundwork for both the UN Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNWRA).
