Amit Pleasanton Sharma

Amit Sharma is the co-founder of Empowerment Capital, a strategic advisory company focusing in social enterprise development, corporate “impact” strategy, and risk management. In this capacity, he has been developing a US-based financial services platform that aggregates essential fin-/reg-tech capabilities around blockchain, digital identity,. and comprehensive analytics to better leverage risk/compliance management and cost-effectively service the financially underserved and excluded. Previously, he led Operations and Strategy for Command Global Services (CGS), specializing in the recovery of stolen sovereign assets and strengthening of financial regulatory systems—primarily in emerging markets and post-conflict states. Prior to CGS, he was Chief of Staff and Head of New Products for Mitsubishi UFJ Securities, and also Head of Project Management to the firm’s International Business and Global Markets Units. In Washington DC, Amit served at the US Department of the Treasury, first in the Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence—developing and implementing tools to combat transnational threats and financial crime, including money laundering and terrorist financing. He later served as Chief of Staff to Deputy Secretary Robert Kimmitt and as Advisor of Treasury’s senior team under Secretary Henry Paulson. Amit has served/serves on several working groups, advisory councils and boards, including: Center for Global Development, Foundation for Defense of Democracies’ Center for Sanctions and Illicit Finance, Middlebury’s Center for Social Impact Learning and Georgetown University’s Beeck Center for Social Impact and Innovation. Mr. Sharma is a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and teaches regularly on issues related to international security policy, counter-terrorism finance, risk, and social venture development.
