Former stage actor, in films from 1915. Founded his own studio (Rex) in 1917, subsequently directing psychological dramas about ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. His style differed substantially from the macabre, expressionist fantasies prevalent in German cinema at the time. In the mid-1920's, he briefly returned to acting, then made several films in England and France before his untimely death from gastric poisoning in 1931.
