Professor Khan has been instrumental in a number of major international innovation initiatives including the establishment of the Australian component of the Monash-Warwick Alliance and developing unique new strategies for Monash in Indonesia, the Middle East, Latin America and beyond. He has introduced comprehensive engagement models that involve research, education, industry and government organisations moving beyond the traditional international education strategies of most universities. Professor Khan has personally directed a variety of major research and industry innovation projects totalling hundreds of millions.. Prior to this, Professor Khan was Pro-Vice Chancellor for Global Engagement and also Pro-Vice Chancellor for Industry Engagement and Commercialisation at Monash University where he contributed to various developments involving international public and private organisations, including major contributions to strategies in advanced manufacturing and international development.. Immediately prior to these roles, Professor Khan was the Senior Research Strategist for Monash University contributing to overarching and specific research strategies in the Office of the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research). During this time he was also Director of a number of major research capability developments such as Green Chemical Futures, a $100m clean-tech research centre, and co-creator of the Victorian Centre for Sustainable Chemical Manufacture that links researchers to industry.. Professor Khan was formerly Director of the Monash Institute for Nanosciences and Director during creation of the Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication (MCN) - Australia's largest nano-fabrication centre, which follows a role as Deputy Director of the London Centre for Nanotechnology, a major UK research centre linking Imperial College and University College London. Professor Khan also co-created and was CEO of the 'London Bio-Nano Centre' linking UCL, Imperial College and the UK National Physical Laboratory.. In the USA, Professor Khan worked in commercial and public sector strategy with Booz Allen and Hamilton, one of the world's foremost strategy houses, driving major-transformation in the high-technology industries and in government where he received a US Commissioner's Award..
