Åström's unique quality as a composer is his strong sense of melody, stemming from his roots in Swedish instrumental folk and popular music. His film scores are intimate with original palettes of sound and instrumentation for each film. He often performs and orchestrates his own music, and plays piano, electric and acoustic guitars, and percussion. He has a distinct style of blending orchestra with guitars and synthesized instruments, and instinctively adds elements of folk and pop music. As a child, Åström pursued basic music and piano lessons and began writing original music on the piano when he was nine years old. His music theory and composition studies began at the Stockholm Music Conservatory at the age of 19. After completing the studies, he started his own recording studio in Stockholm, where he came to work with bands, orchestras and a wide range of soloists, choirs and ensembles. He recorded and toured with well-known bands and artists including Miss Li, Titiyo, and Glen Matlock from the legendary band Sex Pistols. He also composed theatre music for the First Physical Theatre Company in South Africa, acclaimed Swedish dancer and choreographer Frauke, Mandarin Orange Performing Arts in New York and Los Angeles Movement Arts. After many years as a studio owner in Sweden, Åström relocated to Boston, where he studied composition at Berklee College of Music under professor Mark Rossi. Since 2011, he is based in Los Angeles where he works as a full-time film composer.A turning point in Åström's career was in 2014, when Lifetime in association with Epiphany Pictures chose him to score the feature drama Child of Grace, starring Ted Levine and Maggie Elizabeth Jones. The film aired on television worldwide in 2015 and Åström's memorable score earned him a nomination for Best Music Score at the International Christian Film Festival in Orlando, Florida. Recently, he composed the original score for two seasons of the Science Channel documentary series Secrets of the Viking Stone, directed by Peter Stormare.Besides scoring films and television he has produced music for commercials, notably the song 'Oh boy', included in the 2010 worldwide Volvo car commercial.
