During WWII, he lived in exile in France, Portugal, the US, and Canada, with the rest of the royal family. He volunteered for the Irish Guards in 1942, and trained at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, UK. He took part in the Battle for Caen, the liberation of Brussels, and combat in Arnhem and the Ardennes before joining the Allied invasion of Nazi Germany.
