When he was 14 he was a guest clarinetist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. At 17 he was leading his first band. After serving in the Army Air Corps in WWII, he had an 18-piece orchestra. He eventually had his own TV variety show on Channel 2 in Los Angeles in the early 1950s.
